Landscape Painting by H W Hicks early 20th Century Gouache og Ilfracombe Devon Lee Bay c1910-20 Unframed Gouache painted on card in very good condition for its age Herbert William Hicks 1880-1944 Was a painter in watercolour and gouache of moorland and coastal scenes, born in Exeter in 1880. 'Herbie Hicks' was a prolific painter of West Country views Many were local Devon views and were usually inscribed wth the location Much of his work was sold through C. Samuel's Gallery, in Fore Street, Exeter. He was a friend of the Exeter artist, Frederick Parr and they sometimes painted together A fall in demand for his pictures in the 1930's forced Hicks to abandon painting and concentrate on his hairdressing business !!
